Aircon rebates,
state by state

Victoria, NSW and South Australia have real discounts on efficient reverse-cycle systems in 2026. Every figure below is checked against official government sources, including the states where the honest answer is $0.

VIC

Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU)

up to $5,530

Australia's biggest aircon incentive, best when replacing gas or old electric heating. Big-system deals shrink 30 September.

NSW

Energy Savings Scheme (ESS)

~$550 typical splits, more for ducted

Upfront discount, no income test. Plus new 0% loans up to $15,000 under Home Energy Saver.

SA

REPS (retailer scheme)

varies by provider

Real discounts, biggest for concession holders and low-income households. No fixed dollar amounts.

ACT

Home Energy Support

case by case

Support is strongest when replacing gas heating as part of electrification, check actsmart.act.gov.au for current rounds.

QLD

No standing scheme

$0 typical

Appliance rebate rounds appear occasionally, worth a quick check when you buy, but budget on no discount.

WA

No standing scheme

$0

No current aircon incentive. Buy on efficiency, running cost is the real rebate over ten summers.

TAS / NT

No standing scheme

$0

Nothing standing for residential aircon in either. Ask your installer anyway, local programs occasionally appear.

30 Sept 2026

Victoria's big-system deals shrink soon. The minimum out-of-pocket on ducted and large multi-split systems triples to $3,000 on 30 September. If that's your job, read what's changing and quote before the deadline.

How to actually collect a rebate

Every real scheme works the same way: the discount is applied upfront on the quote by an accredited installer, never claimed by you afterwards. So the process is simply getting quotes and asking each installer to show the scheme discount as a line item. If a quote doesn't mention it in a state that has a scheme, ask why, that question alone is sometimes worth hundreds of dollars. Our 30-second rebate checker gives you the quick answer for your state and system.

Rebate questions

Is there a federal aircon rebate?
No. The federal small-scale certificate scheme covers rooftop solar, batteries and hot-water heat pumps, not air conditioners. Everything real happens at state level, which is why the answer changes so much depending on where you live.
Why can't anyone tell me an exact rebate amount?
Because the big schemes work through tradeable energy certificates whose prices float with the market, and the discount also scales with your unit's size and efficiency. The exact number only exists on a written quote from an accredited installer, which is why we suggest getting several.
Do rebates apply to any air conditioner?
No, schemes target high-efficiency reverse-cycle units, and since mid-2026 the NSW and VIC schemes have tightened further. A budget unit below the thresholds attracts nothing, which can make a better unit cheaper after the discount.
