How aircon rebates work in Australia

There's no federal aircon rebate. What exists is state energy-efficiency schemes, NSW's Energy Savings Scheme and Victoria's Energy Upgrades program are the big two, which pay accredited providers for verified energy savings. Installing an efficient reverse-cycle system counts, so accredited installers can knock the certificate value off your quote upfront. Elsewhere, programs come and go; when we say "nothing current", ask your installer anyway, local programs occasionally appear.

How does the NSW aircon discount actually work?
Under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, installing a high-efficiency reverse-cycle air conditioner can generate energy savings certificates. Accredited suppliers claim those certificates and pass the value on as an upfront discount on your quote, you don't apply for anything yourself. The catch: it only applies through accredited providers, and the unit must meet efficiency thresholds.
Why are the amounts shown as rough ranges?
Certificate values float with the market, and the discount scales with your unit's size and efficiency rating. The same install can attract different amounts month to month. Treat the figure as a sanity check, and get the exact number on a written quote from an accredited installer.
Do rebates apply to any air conditioner?
No, schemes target high-efficiency reverse-cycle units, usually replacing an older or less efficient system. Budget units below the efficiency thresholds attract nothing, which changes the maths: a more efficient unit can end up cheaper after the discount.
