Good news: you don't need to decode anything. Panasonic prints the manufacture date on the rating plate itself, look for a PRODUCTION YEAR field (six digits: year then month, so 201011 means November 2010) or a DATE NO. line with the year. The serial number itself contains no usable date, so skip any site offering a Panasonic serial decoder.
Find your Panasonic's age in 4 steps
- Find the rating label. Check the side or underside of the indoor unit and the side panel of the outdoor unit. The warranty card your installer completed also records the model, serial and installation date.
- Read the PRODUCTION YEAR line. Six digits: the first four are the year, the last two the month. 201206 reads as June 2012. Some plates carry a simpler DATE NO. field with just the year.
- If the plate is illegible, call Panasonic. Panasonic Australia's customer care line is 13 26 00. Give them the serial number and they can identify the unit. Panasonic also keeps a public archive of discontinued aircon models, useful for placing your model's era.
- Check the refrigerant as a cross-check. R22 means pre-2010 (Australia banned new R22 equipment imports that year) and R32 means recent. R410A is the weakest of the three, because it arrived in the early 2000s and is still fitted to some ducted systems today, so on its own it rules out the R22 era rather than pinning a year. Whichever it shows should agree with the printed date; if the plate is weathered, it's your fallback.
Why there's no Panasonic serial decoder
Panasonic's air conditioner serial numbers don't encode the manufacture date, the date is printed as its own field on the same plate. Technician resources that decode other brands' serials all point Panasonic owners to the PRODUCTION YEAR line instead. Any site offering a Panasonic aircon serial decoder is applying schemes from Panasonic's pro-video gear, which don't transfer.
What the age actually means
The working rules across every brand: under 8 years old with a minor fault, repair it. Over 10 years with a compressor or refrigerant-circuit fault, price a replacement before you approve the repair, the maths usually favours the swap once efficiency gains are counted.
If the sticker says the refrigerant is R22, stop counting: Australia banned imports of new R22 equipment from July 2010, so the unit is 15+ years old. R22 itself is nearly phased out (imports end entirely in 2030), which makes regassing expensive when it is possible at all. On the next major fault, replace rather than repair.
- Panasonic air conditioners sold in Australia carry a 5-year parts and labour warranty from purchase, conditional on installation by a licensed tradesperson and proof of purchase, keep both documents.
- Warranty exclusions worth knowing as units age: lack of maintenance (dirty filters, blocked outdoor coils) and corrosion on coastal installs without extra protection are both carved out, so a serviced unit holds its cover better than a neglected one.
